Core Texts Abroad
The Core Texts Abroad Endowed Scholarship helps make this experience accessible to exceptional students through donor-supported scholarships.

The 300th anniversary of John Howard’s birth marks an important milestone for Howard College of Arts and Sciences and an opportunity to reflect on the enduring legacy of the man whose name the college carries.
Born Sept. 2, 1726, John Howard was an English philanthropist and prison reformer whose Christian faith inspired a lifelong commitment to service, human dignity and meaningful reform. His example helped inspire the name and identity of Howard College and continues to provide a meaningful connection to the values at the heart of a Samford education.

In recognition of John Howard’s 300th birthday, Howard College established a $500,000 fundraising goal benefiting the Core Texts Abroad Endowed Scholarship.
The campaign connects Howard’s legacy of service and global engagement with an investment in transformational opportunities for today’s students and generations to come.
Core Texts London allows students to take ideas beyond the classroom and encounter foundational works of history, philosophy and literature in the places where many of those ideas were written, debated and brought to life. However, the cost of international study can place experiences like this beyond the reach of some students.
Growing the Core Texts Abroad Endowed Scholarship helps reduce those financial barriers and expands access to this formative academic experience.
A gift to the Core Texts Abroad Endowed Scholarship honors John Howard’s legacy while investing in the next generation of Howard College students.
Through continued support, the legacy commemorated by John Howard’s 300th birthday can create opportunities for students to study abroad, encounter new perspectives and carry what they learn into lives of leadership and service.
Core Texts Abroad Endowed Scholarship Recipients
Launched through the leadership of Howard College Dean Dawn McCormack, the endowment will support students in the Core Texts London Program—an immersive summer experience for rising sophomores.
Core Texts London Program Transforms Student’s Perspective
During his time in London, Ocampo experienced the connection between literature, history and location. One of the most impactful moments of the course was attending a live performance of The Tempest at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre.
Your generosity sustains this extraordinary program and invests in the future leaders who will draw from this life-changing experience throughout their lives. For more information or to support the Core Texts Abroad Endowed Scholarship, contact John Roland at jaroland@samford.edu or 205-726-2174.
