Former University of Oklahoma and NFL star running back and current college football analyst Spencer Tillman spoke in Brock Forum Tuesday morning as part of a series of speakers sponsored by Samford's Strong Leadership Academy.
 
Tillman spoke to a full room of Samford students, including a large number of student-athletes, and staff.
 
"This was a great visit," Tillman said of his talk. "I was excited to get a chance to come pour into the hearts and minds of young people. It sounds cliché, but they are the future. Coming to Samford was a tremendous opportunity. I'm glad that my former teammate, (Samford men's golf coach) Al DelGreco invited me to participate and be a part of something special."
 
Tillman played football at Oklahoma from 1982 to 1985, and he served as the captain of the Sooners' 1985 national championship team. Tillman then played eight seasons in the NFL for the Houston Oilers and San Francisco 49ers. He was a co-captain of the 49ers' Super Bowl XXIV championship team from the 1989 season.
 
Tillman talked about the principles of success during Tuesday's lecture. He said he was grateful to have the opportunity to share his message with the students at Samford.
 
"My message is simply, understand the principles that make for success," Tillman said. "And understand that you have a finite amount of time to execute those principles to get the desired outcomes you want. That's my message to them and I'm excited that I had a chance to share that with them."
 
Tillman currently serves as the lead analyst for College Football Today on CBS. He has served in that capacity since 1999.
 
Tillman said leadership is one of the most important attributes a person can have. He added that our society today needs more leaders.
 
"Leadership is the attribute in greatest demand, yet shortest supply," Tillman said. "That's the difficult truth. We need more leaders in this nation."
 
Tillman's appearance marked the third of three scheduled lectures sponsored by the Leadership Academy. Olympic Gold Medalist Picabo Street spoke on Feb. 17, and Samford graduate Jeff Stephens gave a lecture on March 3.
 
Samford's Strong Leadership Academy is a program jointly developed between the athletics department and the Frances Marlin Mann Center for Ethics and Leadership. Its mission is to bring in successful athletes to share their personal stories and the importance of faith and character to success in all areas of life to Samford student-athletes.
