Samford University’s McWhorter School of Pharmacy recognized its third-year Doctor of Pharmacy students during the annual professional pinning ceremony on Jan. 16, marking an important transition as students prepare to begin the final phase of the PharmD curriculum. 

Interim Dean Michael Kendrach said the pinning ceremony reflects the increased responsibility students take on as they move from primarily classroom-based learning into clinical practice rotations. 

“This milestone emphasizes that students are taking on new learning responsibilities and a higher level of professionalism as they represent themselves and the school to patients and the broader pharmacy community,” Kendrach said. 

The ceremony also highlighted the role students play as emerging leaders in the profession. Brett Bellew, PharmD ’11, delivered the keynote address, encouraging students to embrace the challenges ahead and approach their fourth year with confidence and purpose. 

As students prepare to enter their fourth year of experiential learning, Bellew encouraged them to recognize the leadership role they are stepping into and the influence they will carry in both professional and personal settings. 

“You will be looked at as leaders by your colleagues, pharmacy technicians, other members of the health care team and even your own families,” he said. “Embrace that responsibility and learn to lead with passion and compassion. Your leadership has the power to create an impact far beyond what you may realize.” 

Kelly-Anne McMaster, class president, shared a student perspective on the significance of the ceremony and the collective journey of her classmates. 

“The pinning ceremony represents far more than a milestone in my education,” McMaster said. “It reflects years of dedication and growth and our shared commitment to serving patients, advancing the profession and leading with integrity and compassion.”
