Speaker ACCP Michael Maddux

Samford University welcomed Michael S. Maddux, executive director of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy to speak as part of the McWhorter School of Pharmacy Dean’s Distinguished Lecture Series.

The series was created by McWhorter School of Pharmacy Dean Michael Crouch to bring national thought leaders to Samford’s campus to speak on contemporary topics related to health care and the profession of pharmacy.

With his presentation titled, “Professional Transformation Through the Lens of Clinical Pharmacy: Deja vu All Over Again,” Maddux spoke about the evolving field of pharmacy and the importance of pharmacy education. Discussing key moments in pharmacy history, starting in the 1960s, Maddux applied the momentous moments in pharmacy history to the current climate and how they have affected the field of clinical pharmacy.

Maddux affirmed the school’s commitment to interprofessional education, discussing how it prepares graduates for today’s focus on a team-based approach to care. “The key to success in team-based care is shared goals, clear roles, mutual trust and effective communication,” he said.

“It was an honor to have Dr. Maddux visit Samford,” said Michael Crouch, dean of McWhorter School of Pharmacy. “Through this lecture series, we create opportunities for students to interact with national leaders and witness their dedication and commitment to the profession, which is so evident in Dr. Maddux’s work.”

Maddux has served as the executive director of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy since 2004. He has received awards for practice, teaching, and leadership, and his publications have focused on clinical problems and pharmacotherapy in the organ transplant recipient, ability-based education, and curriculum assessment.
