Samford University School of Performing Arts' faculty recital on Tuesday, Oct. 2, will include the premiere of a new composition.

Dr. Don Sanders, piano; Angela Flaniken, viola; and Jeffrey Flaniken, violin, will perform at 7:30 p.m. in Brock Recital Hall. The public is invited free of charge. The three musicians all teach on the Samford music faculty.

The recital will feature the inaugural public performance of "Five Casual Pieces for Violin and Viola" by Samford music faculty member Dr. James A. Jensen.

The piece was written for the Flanikens while the composer was completing an international artist residency at The Banff Centre in Alberta, Canada, during the winter and spring of 2007. At the time, Jensen was on sabbatical leave from Samford, where he is chair of the theory/composition department and also teaches clarinet.

The recital program will also include Alan Shulman's "Theme and Variations for Viola and Piano," Faure's "Apres un reve," arranged for violin, viola and piano by Jeffrey Flaniken; and Johannes Brahms' "Sonata in D Minor for Violin and Piano."
