Samford Faculty Begin New School Year With Workshop

Samford University will hold its annual Faculty Workshop Monday and Tuesday, Aug. 22-23, in preparation for the start of the Fall semester.   Dr. Herma B. Williams, associate provost at Gordon College in Wenham, Mass., will speak on the importance of diversity on campus and practical ways a campus community can work together to achieve that goal. President Thomas Corts and other administrators and faculty members will speak and bring reports on various topics.

One focus of the workshop will be a look at the reaffirmation of accreditation with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools that Samford will undergo in 2007. Significant changes have occurred in the process since Samford's last review in 1996.

Samford's fall semester will begin Monday, Aug. 29.

Cornelius Receives Garner Memorial Scholarship Award from Education School 

Jeffrey Cornelius of Tuscumbia, Ala., was named the inaugural winner of the $1,000 Alto Luther Garner Memorial Scholarship Award presented by Samford's Orlean Bullard Beeson School of Education and Professional Studies. Cornelius is a science teacher and Scholar's Bowl coach at Colbert Heights High School. He is pursuing a doctor of education in educational leadership degree at Samford.

The new award is given to a student judged to have a high degree of humility, integrity, compassion, decisiveness, a keen sense of justice, a belief in the ability of others, commitment, loyalty and leadership.

The late Dr. Garner was the longtime dean of Samford's education school.

Samford's Shepherd Participates in Summer Holocaust Study 

Samford University political science chair Fred Shepherd was one of 19 invited to participate in the Seminar on Social Sciences and the Holocaust at the U.S. Holocaust Museum for Advanced Holocaust Studies in Washington, D.C. June 8-17. The seminar brought Holocaust experts together with social scientists that integrate Holocaust history into their courses.

Samford Education Dean Named to NCCI Executive Council 

Dr. Jean Ann Box, acting dean of Samford University's Orlean Bullard Beeson School of Education and Professional Studies, has been elected to a three-year term on the executive council of the National Consortium for Continuous Improvement in Higher Education. Headquartered in Hartford, Conn., the NCCI works to identify, promote, support and share effective organizational practices among the nation's universities.

Samford Performing Arts Dean Honored for Contributions to Music 

Samford University School of Performing Arts Dean S. Milburn Price, Jr., was presented the 2005 W. Hines Sims Award for distinguished lifetime contributions to church music at the annual meeting of the Baptist Church Music Conference in Atlanta in June.

Dr. Price has served as dean since 1993. He holds the Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Southern California.
