Advocacy and Family Policy Concentration
Focused on protecting children’s rights, safety and well-being, this concentration examines the social, cultural and global factors that shape child advocacy and protection. Students learn to identify risk factors and signs of abuse and neglect while exploring challenges that can limit access to support, especially in times of crisis or displacement. Coursework emphasizes ethical advocacy, policy awareness and strategies that promote resilience and equity for children and families.
Child Life Concentration
This concentration is for those who desire to work in a medical setting providing emotional, social and intellectual support for children and families. Students learn the developmental impact of illness and injury and determine coping strategies to help children facing short- and long-term hospital stays and health-related issues. Certified child life specialists help improve patient and family care by incorporating therapeutic play, preparation and education that reduces uncertainty, fear and anxiety for children facing hospital stays.
Gerontology Concentration
This concentration equips students with the essential knowledge and skills to support and advocate for individuals in the later stages of life. With a strong emphasis on the physical, emotional and social aspects of aging, students gain a deeper understanding of how aging impacts not only individuals but also their families and communities. As the aging population continues to grow, professionals with expertise in gerontology play a critical role in improving quality of life, guiding families through transitions, and shaping policies and services that promote dignity and well-being for older adults.
