Catholic convert Dr. Scott Hahn will speak at Samford University March 3 in a program sponsored by the Samford Catholic Student Association and the Office of New Evangelization of the Diocese of Birmingham.

“Covenant and Communion: Reading the Bible from the Heart of the Church,” is the topic of the 7 p.m. talk in Wright Center Concert Hall. The program is free and open to the public, but pre-registration is requested at www.samford.edu/catholic or by calling (205) 726-2677.

Hahn will be introduced by Dr. Timothy George, dean of Samford’s Beeson Divinity School. Dr. George has been active in evangelical-Roman Catholic Church dialogue.

A popular speaker and teacher on a variety of topics related to scripture and the Catholic faith, Hahn is professor of theology and scripture at Franciscan University of Steubenville in Ohio. He is founder and director of the Saint Paul Center for Biblical Theology. In 2005, he was appointed Pope Benedict XVI chair of biblical theology and liturgical proclamation at St. Vincent Seminary in Latrobe, Penn.

Hahn is the author of The Lamb’s Supper, Reasons to Believe, The Catholic Bible Dictionary, Covenant and Communion, Kinship by Covenant, Signs of Life,Spirit and Life and Rome Sweet Home, co-authored with his wife, Kimberly.

He worked 10 years in youth and pastoral ministry in Protestant congregations and is a former theology professor at Chesapeake Theological Seminary. He was ordained in 1982 at Trinity Presbyterian church in Fairfax, Virginia, and entered the Catholic Church in 1986.

He holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Grove City College and Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, and a Ph.D. in biblical theology from Marquette University
