Best-selling author Brennan Manning will speak at Samford University Thursday, Sept. 22, at 10 a.m. in Reid Chapel. The public is invited.

Manning's popular books include The Ragamuffin Gospel: Embracing the Unconditional Love of God, Lion and Lamb/the Relentless Tenderness of Jesus and Stranger to Self-Hatred. 

A U.S. Marine during the Korean War, Manning later studied at a Catholic seminary and was ordained to the Franciscan priesthood. After some years spent in manual labor and nights of silent prayers as a member of an Order committed to a life among the poor, he established an experimental community in Bayou La Batre, Ala. He eventually felt God's call out of the Order, married and settled in New Orleans. He writes and preaches on God's unconditional love in Jesus Christ.

Manning's Samford lecture is presented as this year's Howard L. and Martha H. Holley Lectures: New Testament Voices for a Contemporary World, established in memory of the Holley's and in honor of University Professor Dr. William E. Hull.
