Program Overview

The Master of Music Education (MME), traditional program, is designed to prepare students for increasing responsibilities in the field of music teaching. Applicants for this degree plan must hold initial teacher certification (Alabama Class B or its equivalent). Graduates may pursue Class A teacher certification from the Alabama State Department of Education (ALSDE) upon meeting the Alabama Core Teaching Standards (ACTS).

Entrance Expectations

Teachers will submit the following in preparation for entrance into the traditional format of the MME. Note: MME applicants must currently hold a bachelor’s degree in music education, including a student teaching experience, and a state sponsored teacher’s licensure.

  1. A completed Application for Graduate Studies in Music.
  2. A cover letter requesting admission to the MME program.
  3. A copy of a valid teaching certificate (Initial Licensure) A cover .
  4. Official transcripts from institutions attended since high school.
  5. Three (3) letters of recommendation.
  6. Satisfactory Dispositions Assessment.
  7. A teaching video and lesson plan (15-20 minutes in length) that demonstrates instructional skills. The video must represent your understanding of rehearsal/classroom instruction that best fits your current teaching environment. Internship videos may be used.
  8. An interview with the music education faculty.
