Program Overview
The Master of Music in Education (MME) is designed to prepare students for music teaching. The alternative master’s program (Pattern 2) is for persons whose previous education does not make them eligible for an Alabama Class B teaching certificate. Completion of this degree qualifies the individual for an Alabama Class A teaching certificate. To be eligible for this program, applicants must:
- Hold a Bachelor of Music (BM) degree or its equivalent.
- Have an undergraduate GPA of 3.0
OR - Submit qualifying test scores for:
- Praxis Core Reading (156)
- Praxis Core Writing (162)
- Praxis Core Math (150)
- Wish to seek initial Alabama state certification.
Graduates may pursue Class A teacher certification from the Alabama State Department of Education (ALSDE) upon meeting the Alabama Core Teaching Standards (ACTS).

Audition Expectations
The following requirements must be met for entrance into the program:
- A completed Application for Graduate Studies in Music
- Acover letter requesting admission into the Non-Traditional program.
- Official transcripts from institutions attended since high school.
- A Bachelor of Music (BM) or equivalent degree from an institution accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM) is required.
- Undergraduate GPA must be at least 2.75, with a cohort average of 3.0
- If the undergraduate GPA is 3.0 or higher, no testing is required.
- If the undergraduate GPA is lower than 3.0 the applicant must submit:
- Praxis Core Reading score of at least 156
- Praxis Core Writing score of at least 162
- Praxis Core Math score of at least 150
- Three (3) letters of recommendation
- Satisfactory Dispositions Assessment
- Undergraduate GPA must be at least 2.75, with a cohort average of 3.0
- An interview with the music education faculty.
